Somehow, I arrived late to the Onimusha party. As a tremendous fan of the survival horror genre, I couldn’t believe these classics passed me by when they originally came out. I’ve since remedied this by playing parts of the recent remasters, Onimusha: Warlords and Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, and they both come highly recommended today.
Thanks to those games, I developed an appreciation for how the Onimusha series found creative ways to blend actual Japanese history into something stranger, darker, and more dangerous by filling it with samurai legends, supernatural horror, and crisp swordplay. I also liked how it tapped into that campy horror aesthetic without hitting you over the head with it. Those original games knew they were having fun and welcomed you to come along for the ride.
